Yankee Surgeon: The Life and Times of Usher Parsons, 1788–1868 History of Science off the coast of Martha’sGoldowsky, Seebert J., 1988, xvi + 450pp. Best known as the surgeon in Oliver Hazard Perrys squadron during the War of 1812 and as a participant in the Battle of Lake Erie, Parsons remained in the Navy for nearly ten years. After obtaining a degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1818, he separated from the service and settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where he practiced surgery and taught anatomy at the Medical School of Brown University until
